{"id":282,"date":"2021-07-20T22:14:15","date_gmt":"2021-07-20T22:14:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jjwpr.com\/blog\/?p=282"},"modified":"2021-07-21T14:55:24","modified_gmt":"2021-07-21T14:55:24","slug":"how-to-say-no-effectively-to-leadership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jjwpr.com\/blog\/2021\/07\/20\/how-to-say-no-effectively-to-leadership\/","title":{"rendered":"How To Say \u201cNo\u201d Effectively to Leadership"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Such a joy to be back IN PERSON for a presentation at the National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA) annual seminar last week.&nbsp; It reinforces how important face-to-face communication is in building relationships and cementing our learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My colleague John Lyday, APR, Fellow PRSA and I presented on the <strong>challenges and strategies needed to say \u201cno\u201d when leadership is heading in the wrong direction<\/strong>.&nbsp; Some \u201ctakeaways\u201d (both from us and our participants) included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Remember <strong><u>leaders are human too<\/u><\/strong> (and that includes our School Board members).&nbsp; They have egos, and they do not want to appear wrong or be depicted as bullies; they want to please others, etc.&nbsp; They also have past experiences that influence their decisionmaking<strong><em>.&nbsp; The key is to really get to know your leadership what makes them tick and motivates them.<\/em><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><u>Five strategies for saying \u201cno<\/u><\/strong>\u201d<ul><li><strong>Education<\/strong> \u2013 being the expert <em>before<\/em> the issue arises, teaching leadership about effective communication practices and behavioral\/communication theories, strategies<\/li><li>Having <strong>data<\/strong> &#8211; doing research on stakeholders to know them well; also having ability to do dipstick research overnight to help inform any decisionmaking<\/li><li>Offering <strong>options<\/strong> rather than solutions (caveat: never offer an option that is not good \u2013 it is the one they will pick)<\/li><li><strong>Create scenarios on<\/strong> what is likely to happen with or without action, with options (including their suggestions).&nbsp; Be sure to include pros and cons.<\/li><li><strong>Know who influences leadership<\/strong>, where they stand on most subjects; and how to most effectively use their influence to help guide leadership when needed<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong><u>Critical strategies\/theories to utilize, educate<\/u><\/strong> leadership about:<ul><li>PR Behavioral Model (Jackson\/Grunig)&nbsp;<\/li><li>Behavioral Messaging (Grunig)<\/li><li>(<em>email either one of us for copies!)<\/em><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Regularly conduct issue anticipation brainstorming<\/strong> to identify issues that might break and build strategies.&nbsp; Group into \u201clatent\u201d, \u201cemerging\u201d, \u201chot\u201d and \u201cfallout\u201d issues to manage discussions.&nbsp; Here are some issues that were identified by session participants:<ul><li>COVID-19 and its continuing impact on school communications<\/li><li>Critical race theory conspiracies that appear to be happening independently but are reportedly being fueled by organized conservative groups<\/li><li>Violence being directed at Asian-American families and students<\/li><li>Organized opposition to school district efforts to make LGBTQ students feel welcome and safe in school<\/li><li>Cyber-security in light of recent malware and ransomware attacks on other sectors<\/li><li>\u2026 and, of course, those that were old which may become new again, e.g. gun safety, sex education, etc.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>For more on these subjects and more, don\u2019t hesitate to pick up the phone or email us.
